Our 1st Patron is none other than St. Genesius, whose profession as an actor, comedian, and playwright creates an obvious connection to our mission at More Than Entertained. St. Genesius lived in Rome during the Christian persecution under the Emperor Diocletian in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. In the summer of 303, he was given the opportunity to compose and perform a play for the emperor. Because of the great Christian persecution happening at the time, Genesius chose to create a parody of the Christian faith, specifically focusing on the Sacrament of Baptism. During the performance, while he was acting as a sick man in need of Baptism, Genesius was instantly converted as the water fell upon him. He turned to Emperor Diocletian and proclaimed, “I came here today to please an earthly Emperor but what I have done is to please a heavenly King. I came here to give you laughter, but what I have done is to give joy to God and his angels.” Genesius was arrested, tortured, and martyred after he refused to renounce his faith in Jesus Christ.
St. Genesius, Pray for Us.
Our 2nd Patron Saint at MTE is Blessed Carlo Acutis, whose devotion to Jesus and use of modern entertainment provide a natural model for our mission. Born on May 3, 1991, he was raised in Milan, Italy, and quickly developed a reputation for holiness in his community. He was fervently devoted to the Eucharist—upon receiving his First Communion in the Catholic Church when he was 7 years old, Carlo never missed another daily Mass, and he would spend hours in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. He was also regarded as a technological genius—Carlo was a film editor, computer programmer, and website creator (best known for creating a website that sought to provide a medium for all of the world’s Eucharistic miracles). At the age of 15, he contracted leukemia and died on October 12, 2006.
Blessed Carlo Acutis, Pray for Us.
